Loyal Dog Stays By Owner’s Grave For Six Years

A dogs loyalty to their human owners never ceases to amaze and here is the heartbreaking tale of one of those devoted dogs that goes above and beyond.

Capitán, a German Shepherd has sat by his owner’s grave, Miguel Guzman for the past six years, rarely leaving the graveside of the man who adopted him for his teenage son Damian in 2005.

Guzman died suddenly just one year later, in 2006, and when the family returned home from his funeral, Capitán was gone.
Guzman’s wife said that Capitán disappeared from their home shortly after her husband died, and after searching for him, she and her son believed he was either killed by a car or adopted by another family.

When the family returned to the cemetery just days later to visit Guzman’s grave there was Capitán. They couldn’t explain how he had managed to locate the right grave, but there he was.

The German Shepherd from the Argentinian town of Villa Carlos Paz Cordoba, has chosen to remain by his master’s grave, even though he died over six years ago.

“He turned up here one day, all on his own, and started wandering all around the cemetery until he eventually found the tomb of his master,” the cemetery’s director, Hector Baccega, told the newspaper. “During the day he sometimes has a walk around the cemetery, but always rushes back to the grave. And every day, at 6 o’clock sharp, he lies down on top of the grave stays there all night.”

Staff at the cemetery are feeding and taking care of Capitán as their own and Guzman’s son says he doesn’t think the dog will ever leave.

“I’ve tried to bring Capitán home several times, but he always comes straight back to the cemetery,” said 15-year-old Damian. “I think he’s going to be there until he dies too. He’s looking after my dad.”
