On June 26th, 2010, my precious little Chihuahua pup Mia was born by
c-section. The vets noticed a cleft palate right away. Mia had many
surgeries, all of which failed despite being taken to the top
universities and veterinarians. She was given little hope of survival
and I was told that euthanasia was best. But I couldn’t give up on this
little girl and vowed to fight for her as long as she continued to fight
for herself. Mia was given a chance at life and even though it was
short-lived, she lived it to the fullest. Her amazing spirit and will to
live was unlike anything I have ever experienced. She woke up each and
every day with a smile on her face.
Sadly, on April 11th, 2012 two months shy of her 2nd birthday, Mia
passed away from pneumonia. I told Mia that if she was tired of fighting
and wanted to go to sleep, I would miss her but it would be okay. I
never thought that I would lose her that day. But her little body was
tired and she knew that she was here long enough to accomplish her
mission.
Mia’s legacy lives on through The Mia Foundation which was created in her honor. She has inspired over 11,000 people from all over the world and continues to create miracles every day.
The Mia Foundation was developed to give animals with birth defects a fighting chance. It wasn’t until after Mia’s death that I realized the reason for her existence. By having her life saved, she in turn touched so many people and saved many animals too. Mia was a miracle and an inspiration. She taught us to be brave, to be strong, and to smile in the face of adversity. But most importantly, she taught us love. She opened the eyes of many who thought that special needs babies weren’t worth the effort and that was Mia’s real mission.
Mia’s story has inspired people to adopt animals with birth defects that may have otherwise been overlooked. Because of her strength, determination, love and will to live, she has enriched the lives of numerous people. She had a huge zest for life and her tiny paw left a huge imprint on so very many hearts.
